FIRMS: Fire Information for Resource Management System

Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS)

The Earth Engine version of the Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) dataset contains the LANCE fire detection product in rasterized form. The near real-time (NRT) active fire locations are processed by LANCE using the standard MODIS MOD14/MYD14 Fire and Thermal Anomalies product.

MODIS stands for MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. The MODIS instrument is on board NASA’s Earth Observing System (EOS) Terra (EOS AM) and Aqua (EOS PM) satellites. The orbit of the Terra satellite goes from north to south across the equator in the morning and Aqua passes south to north over the equator in the afternoon resulting in global coverage every 1 to 2 days.

The MODIS thermal activity layer can be used to visualize and assess wildfires worldwide. However, it should be noted that this dataset contains many “false positive” (e.g., oil/natural gas wells or volcanoes) since the satellite will detect any large thermal signal.

The MODIS active fire product detects fires in 1-km pixels that are burning at the time of overpass under relatively cloud-free conditions using a contextual algorithm.

NASA’s FIRMS distributes Near Real-Time (NRT) active fire data within 3 hours of satellite observation from the MODIS and VIIRS instruments.
